Well, I think, you know, the university and the high schools are also important, but depends how I'm going to do in tennis - well, I hope. I mean, it depends, so I don't know yet. I think the whole boycott thing was a bit too much. It's because we're accomplished so much in women's tennis in the last two, three years. We deserve something better. Men can have a huge turnover of sponsorship and still survive a lot better than the women. But the women's ratings are better, at least at home in the United States than in the men's tennis. Ever since that day when I was 11 years old, and I wasn't allowed in a photo because I wasn't wearing a tennis skirt, I knew that I wanted to change the sport. I was always in the tennis business-from 1968. I was in tournaments and also on World Team Tennis teams as well. When I was 12, every little girl in Russia was trying to wear her hair like mine and playing tennis. When I play, I feel like I'm in a theatre, why should I look ugly then, because I'm a tennis-player? For the first couple of years I played really bad tennis. It was so bad that they booed me off the court. Now I do bowling, golf, and tennis. I want to be a good bowler. I started when I was 8 years old, which is obviously nowadays pretty late, but I guess in my generation it was all right. I had plenty of other interests and I didn't do only tennis. Seems like most of the kids today are into other sports other than tennis. I just wanted to play tennis. I started because I wanted to pick up another sport and then as I was slowly getting better I wanted to see how far I can go but I always wanted to be myself. I wanted to be original. I didn't want to copy anybody's style. Billie and I did wonders for women's tennis. They owe me a piece of their checks. Tennis is seen all around the world; if I am home or anywhere in the country, United States, people will stare. If Davis Cup was a little bit less or once every two years, I would be more inclined to play. But the way it is now, it is too much tennis for me. You will never have great tennis champions from England because of the cold and dark, but most of all because people only care about the sport for two weeks a year, and then they're on to something else. There's just not a great love of the sport there. I am a hero worshiper. I love the number one tennis player. I love the number one baseball player. I want to see those records broken. Stop trying to treat music like it's a tennis shoe, something to be branded. If the music industry wants to save money, they should take a look at some of their six-figure executive expense accounts. All those lawsuits can't be cheap, either. |
