It's not fair, but there's plenty of other work for us to do. Disney made a fortune out of inventing the businessman's idea of the imaginary as the contradictory of the businessman's idea of the real. Michael Eisner let it be known last week that he had no intention of leaving the entertainment business once he steps down as CEO of Disney in October. The only one that seems to be able to hold the business is Disney. They do it is because they have a fabulous philosophy about marketing- but even they wavered. I blame it on Walt Disney, where animals are given human qualities. People don't understand that a wild animal is not something that is nice to pat. It can seriously harm you. That's always at the heart and soul of Disney's features, the feeling of a family values. Disney had made such a great deal of money on Snow White that the banks gave him the go-ahead on the next three films. But he was heavily dependent on the foreign market. His feeling was the name Walt Disney represented all of us. Walt was hanging by his teeth financially and really I think he was for most of his career. Not at all like today. I think that might have been an element in it, and people have asked me that very thing. Remember, Disney is the majority shareholder, but it is not an operating division of Disney. The great dream merchant Disney was a success because make-believe was what everyone seemed to need in a spiritually empty land. I'm saddened to see that some have been misled into believing that Mr. Disney was something other than a kind, caring man. Then, as now, the Disney studio buzzed with activity. You had a strong impression of being at the center of something very exciting. Mr. Disney and his staff were constantly scouting for great stories to bring to life on film. Pixar is going in the direction of the early Disney. And it's also corporate, where they have four or five projects in the works. I don't want to get into that subject. For instance, some early ideas for Florida were done only recently. The idea of a little village was there from the beginning and now we have this "Celebration" village. Same thing for the Disney Institute. Walt talked about this idea in the very first. Disney's something to be a little alarmed about. It's not just a little theme park anymore. It's now an ethic and outlook and strategy that goes way beyond central Florida. Disney has the best casting. If he doesn't like an actor he just tears him up. Disney was not a good animator, he didn't draw well at all, but he was always a great idea man, and a good writer. One thing I always heard from the begining when I talked about this being a movie - was that the rule is that animated movies don't work unless they're Disney movies for kids. Unless they're family movies. Disney was a family film studio. I was supposed to be their young, leading man. After they found out I was involved with someone, that was the end of Disney. When I was about 17 or 18, I finally admitted to myself that I wasn't going to change. I didn't know what the consequences would be, but I had the definite feeling that it was going to wreck my Disney career. I've got Disney blood running through my veins. There is such amazing talent at Disney. My job is 100% creative, and I am very excited to creatively lead them. Walt Disney had always tried to get more dimension in his animation and when I saw these tapes, I thought, This is it! This is what Walt was waiting for! But when I looked around, nobody at the studio at the time was even halfway interested in it. I also love Disney, and will defend doing so, because there's so much in those films and I don't care if it's stereotyped. There is a relationship between cartooning and people like Mir= and Picasso which may not be understood by the cartoonist, but it definitely is related even in the early Disney. I have a 6-year-old, and his thing is to turn on Radio Disney in the car, and I get such an allergic reaction to listening to that music and the context into which it falls. I'm really working on him about that. Well let's see; I'm not obsessed with... I like Walt Disney except that you know, except for the horrible fascism. I love the art of it. But I have no regrets, man. It's just like God brought me through the drugs, I know he'll bring me through this. We've been able to access deals that under our former relationship with Disney - with tax advantages and strategic partners - that we just weren't able to do. The whole Disney thing is really interesting, in a way, how that's so permeated life and the world and the planet. What can we say about a marketing culture that so openly feeds and colludes with obsession? The Disney empire has developed this to an unprecedented degree of professionalism. |
